Salutations, fair readers!
Last month, I finally got the chance to sign up for Owlcrate—a YA subscription box that brings a new hardcover and lots of other fun goodies to your door every month. This month, the theme was Leading Ladies which, to be honest, is what convinced me to jump on the Owlcrate ship in the first place.
Any way, enough of my chatter, let's get on with the unboxing! My plan with these is to mostly do videos, but I'm currently sick with a cold so I decided to stick with a blog post this time around.
First thing I pulled out was an awesome Tris Prior-inspired tote from Whoviandrea! I actually squealed when I pulled this out because I've seriously been in need of a new bag and Dauntless is my faction (even though, let's be realhere, the initiate training would probably kill me). The tote is great, it's really deep and has long straps so it's perfect for carrying around my books!
The second thing I pulled out is this pretty Katniss-inspired arrow necklace from Crystal Compass on Etsy. It's got a really bright gold finish like a polished mockingjay pin. I want to get a longer chain for it, since it fits a little too high up on my neck for my taste. Thankfully, there's a coupon included for the Etsy shop!
Next I pulled out these adorable Hermione prints from Megan Lara and Meowbox (it's a subscription box for cat owners)! I'm actually a huge fan of Megan Lara's Art Nouveau pieces so I'm really excited that I got this print! I'm gonna find a nice spot in my room to include both of them.
Next I pulled out a Divergent bookmark from Whoviandrea and a Daenerys Targaryen Funko Pop keychain! I actually just started collecting Funko Pop figurines so having a tiny Mother of Dragons to carry around makes me really happy!
Now, onto this month's book, which is none other than...
Julie Murphy's Dumplin'! I'd heard a little about this book a little bit from other book bloggers but, to be honest, I wasn't really interested cause it's a romance (I don't generally read romance books anymore unless they're either LGBTIA+ or look really interesting, because they generally just don't hold my attention anymore).
Then, I opened the book and read the synposis:
Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked . . . until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back. Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all. With starry Texas nights, red candy suckers, Dolly Parton songs, and a wildly unforgettable heroine— Dumplin' is guaranteed to steal your heart.
A story about a quirky, confident, and plus-sized Southern girl who loves Dolly Parton and enters a beauty contest? Sign me the heck up! I read the first ten pages, and I have to say I adore Will! Her attitude about being happy in your own skin is very refreshing. I wish I had characters like her to read about when I was in high school, because I feel like it would've been much easier for me to become comfortable with my own curvy body.
Believe it or not, I'm the same size in both photos (It's the layers, you guys. They can be your best friend or your worst enemy). I know I'm not what you'd call "slim", "toned", or "skinny". I've got a lot of curves and rolls. Honestly, though it took me a long time to come to grips with it, I'm not ashamed of size. Am I fat? Yes, I am. But I'm also smart, funny, creative, caring, and dare I say it, pretty!
Body positivity rant aside, the book came with a few other goodies.
These goodies are a note from the author, a sticker, and a card from another book site. I really love the sticker. I have to find a really awesome place to put it.
So, that's all the magical things I got from this month's Owlcrate. Next month, the theme is...Spooky! According to the head honchos of this lovely box, there should be some fun Halloween goodies and a really scary book.
However, as I cannot afford to pay for the next box and am not fond of scary books, I've elected to opt out of the October box and resume my subscription in November. I can't wait to see what they've got in store for me though!
