Devon Tennyson wouldn't change a thing. She's happy watching Friday night games from the bleachers, silently crushing on best friend Cas, and blissfully ignoring the future after high school. But the universe has other plans. It delivers Devon's cousin Foster, an unrepentant social outlier with a surprising talent for football, and the obnoxiously superior and maddeningly attractive star running back, Ezra, right where she doesn't want them first into her P.E. class and then into every other aspect of her life.
Pride and Prejudice meets Friday Night Lights in this contemporary novel about falling in love with the unexpected boy, with a new brother, and with yourself.

Find it on:

I saw this book in the library, and came to the conclusion that the back cover's excerpt was cheesy. This book would be a typical, mediocre contemporary romance. Probably something I'd roll my eyes over. I'd ship the expected ship* out of obligation. And I'd probably forget I'd ever read it. But, I was feeling in the mood for a cutesy read. The cover is simple enough that I wouldn't be embarrassed to read it in public.

*ship as in relationship. It's a metaphor you see (that's a reference you see... +5 friendship points for anyone who can name the reference!). The relationship is a ship you want to sail and not sink.

And you know what? I ENDED UP BEING THOROUGHLY AND DEEPLY SURPRISED! With only one day left in 2015, I feel like I found one of my top favorite reads of the year. Maybe even my number one favorite read. Why? Because this book made me SMILE. Not just a "aww that's cute" kind of expected smile. No. I smiled because this story made me genuinely happy and it humored the hell out of me. This is a quality read, containing characters with depth, growth, quirky and hilarious dialogue, life issues, and tons and tons of football and Jane Austen.

There was so much to love about this book. I practically need to copy and paste the whole book in order to completely cover everything I loved. BUT ALAS...that is called plagiarism, my dear children, and that is most frowned upon in respectable society. So nix on that! Instead, I shall list everything I loved as spoiler-free, and succinctly as possible.

1. that cover tho

2. Riff raff lions in the periphery of a motivational poster

3. Devon's love for Jane Austen

4. How extraordinarily unextraordinary Devon was

5. Devon's bookishness (hellooo, sistah!)

6. Calling people conceited and saying "fuck" a lot is not very Jane Austen-y

7. pregnant Luna Lovegood

8. SHIPPING Pregnant Luna Lovegood and the dweeb

9. Foster and his early morning smoothies

10. how truthful and unashamedly himself Foster was

11. Foster and his socks pulled up tight around his calves

12. Foster and his shirt tucked into his gym short shorts

13. Foster camping out in the tub with a duck on his head

14. Foster camping out under the table

15. How nonchalantly Foster talks about sex. Like, that's what people DO... why would it be an embarrassing subject? It's like talking about your favorite soda pop.

16. Foster's advice to say what you really feel about dead people. If a person was a dickhead, then they were a dickhead. Don't pretend otherwise at their funerals.

17. There are literally like five football dudes in this book and my heart chose to crush on FOSTER

18. Foster's devotion to Devon

19. COUSINS

20. The fact that certain characters were set up to be douchebag or bitchy cliches but totally shattered the mold with their inherent sweetness

21. CONTINUED references to Jane Austen. Jane Austen didn't make an appearance to beef up how "interesting" the main character is supposed to be. No. Like, Jane Austen is practically a major secondary character. She's practically Devon's best friend.

22. Lindsay is a literal CHEER leader. She is so happy and thinks only good thoughts of other people. Kind of like Charlotte from Princess & The Frog.
23. If Lindsay had asked Devon to Homecoming, Devon probably would have said yes

24. Rachel and her shitty news articles, but she'll rule the world no doubt about it

25. Grilled Cheese friendships and soup metaphors

26. Devon's best friend Cas's love for greasy food

27. Cas's inability to focus on anything

28. Cas's brotherly devotion to Devon

29. Ezra and his crooked teeth

30. Ezra being an awkward wallflower disguised as a small town celebrity
31. Ezra

32. Ezra's inability to communicate his emotions, therefore giving me Darcy feels

33. Ezra scowling at key chains.

34. Ezra poking said key chains.

35. Ezra accidentally bumping into a key chain rack and causing several key chains to plummet to the ground

36. Ezra being like an onion until you pull back all his layers and discover he's a puppy in disguise

37. Jordon and his dreadlocks oozing with charm

38. Jordan, the champion of everyone's heart

39. The alphabetical reasons to love Jordan, including B- "but damn his ass is fine"

40. Charming Jordan trying to pull a reaction out of stony mute dickhead Ezra

41. Random ass Emir

42. Emir has a troubled past, shows up out of nowhere, lurks in the shadows, disappears for long periods of times. The running theory is that he's Batman.

43. Emir's eyebrow piercing

44. Football Player reading Sense & Sensibility

45. Football Player thinking Pride & Prejudice is the sequel to Sense & Sensibility

46. The fact that I'm just now realizing First & Then is a shout out to Jane Austen titles like Sense & Sensibility or Pride & Prejudice.

47. When Devon is asked out to Homecoming and the asker-outer extends the invitation to the goal posts because he refuses to make eye contact with her

48. Jumping into pools while clad in formal dress

49. Zip Lip kisses

50. Leaving no room for the Holy Ghost

51. Three-hundred seconds

52. The ending resembles a typical Jane Austen ending ...which I also hate BECAUSE I NEED A MINIMUM OF 20 PAGES CONSISTING OF COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF GUSHY DETAILS
